Lake Como with Kids

The family-friendly version of Italy's most photographed lake.

Lake Como with kids is genuinely magical — boat days, gelato in every village, Villa Carlotta's gardens to explore, and easy ferry hopping. The lake is mostly safe to swim in summer, but a few practical choices make the week dramatically better.

Family villa priorities

Look for fenced pools, lake-shore access (some properties have private docks), enclosed gardens (avoid clifftop estates with toddlers), and a kitchen. Bellagio and Menaggio offer the most child-friendly village strolls.

Best lake swim spots

Lido di Bellagio (lifeguarded), Lido di Menaggio (sand-bottomed wading area), the public beach at Onno (shallow, calm), and the wild swimming bays at Lezzeno (deeper, for stronger swimmers).

Easy day trips with kids

Como city's Funicolare to Brunate (a real cable railway, kids love it), the Greenway from Colonno to Cadenabbia (gentle 10km walk, can stop and start), and Bergamo Alta (a medieval walled city, 90 minutes away). Switzerland for chocolate-factory visits 90 minutes north.
