Stunning panoramic view of Lake Como from Bellagio with colorful lakeside villas and mountains

The Best Time to Visit Lake Como: Season-by-Season Guide

11 min read

Lake Como — the jewel of the Italian Lake District — has attracted visitors since Roman times, and it's easy to see why. Dramatic mountains plunge into deep blue waters, palatial villas dot the shoreline, and tiny villages cling to steep hillsides in a display of engineering and beauty that defies logic. But when should you go?

Spring (April–May): The Garden Season

Spring is when Lake Como truly awakens. The famous gardens of Villa Carlotta, Villa Melzi, and Villa Balbianello burst into bloom — azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, and wisteria create a riot of color against the blue lake backdrop.

April can still be cool (12–18°C) and occasionally rainy, but the gardens are at their peak. May is ideal — warm enough for outdoor dining, uncrowded enough to enjoy Bellagio without the tour groups, and the ferry schedule is in full swing.

Price advantage: 20–30% lower than peak summer rates.

Summer (June–August): Peak Season

Summer is when Lake Como lives up to its glamorous reputation. Temperatures reach 28–32°C, the lake water warms to a swimmable 22–24°C, and the entire shoreline comes alive with restaurants, boat tours, and evening passeggiata.

June is the sweet spot — warm, vibrant, but not yet at peak crowd levels. July and August bring the highest temperatures, biggest crowds, and highest prices. The famous towns (Bellagio, Varenna) can feel congested, especially when lake cruises disgorge day-trippers.

Insider tip: Base yourself on the quieter eastern or western shores and boat into the central triangle when you want to explore.

Autumn (September–October): The Golden Season

Our favorite time to visit. September retains summer's warmth with fewer crowds, and October brings golden foliage that transforms the mountainsides. The ferry schedules are still frequent, restaurants remain open, and the light takes on a soft, painterly quality.

Insider tip: Late September often offers the best weather of the entire year on Lake Como — clear skies, 22–25°C, and serene lake conditions.

Winter (November–March): The Quiet Season

Many visitors assume Lake Como shuts down in winter, but that's only partially true. The towns of Como, Lecco, and Bellagio remain open year-round, and winter brings a moody, atmospheric beauty — mist rising from the lake, snow-capped mountains, and virtually no tourists.

Drawbacks: Many restaurants and hotels close from November through February. Ferry service is reduced. The villa gardens are closed.

Advantages: Rock-bottom prices, incredible photography conditions, and the Christmas markets in Como are charming.

Our Recommendation

For the ideal Lake Como experience, we recommend mid-May to mid-June or September. You'll get warm weather, blooming gardens, active ferry schedules, and manageable crowds. The lake is at its most beautiful, and villa availability is better than peak summer.
