When to Visit Lake Como

Garden bloom, ferry season and quiet shoulder months.

Lake Como has a much shorter peak season than Tuscany — and the ferries, gardens, and many villa kitchens follow a precise calendar. Picking the right month makes the difference between a quiet lake and shoulder-to-shoulder in Bellagio.

Garden bloom: April to early June

The unmissable window for Villa Carlotta and Villa Melzi — azaleas in late April, rhododendrons in May, peonies in early June. Temperatures 18–25°C, occasional rain, and the lake at its greenest. Our preferred window for first-time visitors.

Peak summer: late June to August

Temperatures 28–32°C, full ferry schedule, every restaurant booked, and Lake Como at its most glamorous. Also at its most crowded — Bellagio's main street is shoulder-to-shoulder in August. Book 5–6 months ahead.

Quiet luxury: September and October

Our staff's favourite months. Warm enough to swim until mid-September, ferries still running, restaurants open, lake silent on weekdays. October brings the autumn colours on the Lugano side of Menaggio.

Winter: November to March

Many ferries reduce frequency, several lakeside restaurants close, and the most photographed villas shut their gardens. But the major hotels stay open, Como city is delightful, and the snow on the surrounding Alps frames the lake spectacularly.
