Lake Como Ferry Guide

The lake's public transport system — when to use it.

Lake Como has the most comprehensive ferry system of any Italian lake — slow boats, fast hydrofoils, car ferries, all operated by Navigazione Laghi (the state operator). Used properly, you barely need a car.

Slow ferries (battello)

The picturesque option — open-deck, 2–3 hours from Como to Colico stopping at every village. Best for sightseeing. €5–€16 depending on the route.

Fast hydrofoils (aliscafo)

Indoor, faster, all-stop or limited. Como–Bellagio in 50 minutes. €15–€20. Useful for time-pressed travellers.

Car ferries (traghetto)

Three-port loop: Cadenabbia–Bellagio–Varenna–Menaggio. Every 30–60 minutes 6.00–22.00. Cars allowed; foot passengers €5; cars €12–€18.

Tickets and tips

Buy at the dock kiosks (cash or card). The 1-day or 3-day pass is good value if you plan to lake-hop. The fast hydrofoils require advance seat assignment in summer.
