Lake Como's Y-shaped geography creates a necklace of distinct towns, each with its own character, cuisine, and reasons to visit. Choosing where to base yourself — and which towns to explore — can feel overwhelming. Here's our definitive guide.
Bellagio — The Pearl of Lake Como
Sitting at the point where Lake Como's two southern branches diverge, Bellagio is the lake's most famous town — and deservedly so. Its steep, cobbled lanes lined with silk shops and gelaterie, its panoramic waterfront promenade, and its two stunning villa gardens (Villa Melzi and Villa Serbelloni) make it the quintessential Lake Como experience.
Best for: First-time visitors, garden lovers, those who want to be at the center of everything.
Dining tip: Avoid the tourist-trap restaurants on the waterfront. Instead, climb the stairs to Bilacus for authentic local cuisine at reasonable prices.
Varenna — The Romantic Alternative
Directly across the lake from Bellagio, Varenna is smaller, quieter, and impossibly romantic. Pastel houses cascade down to the water, a lakeside walkway (Passeggiata degli Innamorati — Lovers' Walk) connects the ferry dock to the village center, and the pace of life is deliciously slow.
Best for: Couples, photography enthusiasts, those seeking charm without crowds.
Must-see: Villa Monastero's botanical gardens, stretching along the lakefront with terraces, fountains, and subtropical plants.
Menaggio — The Sporting Hub
On the western shore, Menaggio is Lake Como's most active town. It has the lake's best public beach (Lido di Menaggio), a renowned golf course, and excellent access to hiking trails in the surrounding mountains.
Best for: Active travelers, families, golfers.
Day trip: Menaggio is the closest major town to the Swiss border — Lugano is just 30 minutes away.
Tremezzina — Villa Country
The stretch of lakefront from Lenno to Tremezzo is home to Lake Como's most magnificent villas: Villa Balbianello (Star Wars, James Bond), Villa Carlotta (spectacular gardens), and numerous private estates. The Greenway del Lago trail connects the villages with a gentle lakeside walk.
Best for: Villa enthusiasts, garden lovers, walkers.
Cernobbio — Quiet Elegance
At the southern end of the lake's western branch, Cernobbio combines easy access to Como city with a refined, residential atmosphere. The famous Villa d'Este hotel dominates the waterfront, but the town itself has charming squares and excellent restaurants.
Como — The Urban Gateway
The city of Como is the lake's commercial center and transportation hub. Its magnificent Duomo, silk museum, and lakefront promenade warrant a visit, and the funicular to Brunate offers the lake's most accessible panoramic viewpoint.
Lecco — The Eastern Shore
Often overlooked in favor of the western shore, Lecco and the eastern arm offer equally stunning scenery with far fewer tourists. The setting inspired Alessandro Manzoni's I Promessi Sposi, Italy's most famous novel.
How to Choose Your Base
We recommend basing yourself in the central triangle (Bellagio, Varenna, or Menaggio) for maximum flexibility. The ferries connecting these three towns run frequently, and the mid-lake position gives easy access to both the northern and southern reaches.
Our Lake Como villas are carefully selected for their proximity to ferry connections and the balance of convenience and tranquility that makes a lake holiday special.
