Lake Como Villa Gardens Guide

Four indispensable estates and when to visit each.

Lake Como's villa gardens are the lake's other cultural heritage — Italian Renaissance terraces and English romantic landscapes side by side, all painstakingly maintained since the 18th and 19th centuries. Visit the right four and you have seen the best of European villa gardening.

Villa Carlotta (Tremezzo)

The azalea and camellia collection is unparalleled — peak bloom mid-April to early June. Italian terraced garden and a botanical English park. Also a small museum with Canova sculptures. Open March–November, €12 entry.

Villa Melzi (Bellagio)

An English-style romantic landscape designed in the 1810s for Napoleon's vice-president of the Italian Republic. Plane trees, azaleas, an Oriental garden, an Egyptian sculpture pavilion. Open daily April–October, €8.

Villa del Balbianello (Lenno)

Cinema-famous (Star Wars II, Casino Royale, A Month by the Lake). Sits on a promontory between the central and southern lake branches. Access by boat from Lenno or 1km walk. Open mid-March to mid-November, €11 gardens / €22 with villa interior.

Villa Monastero (Varenna)

Lakeside botanical garden running 2km along the shoreline. Mediterranean terraces, citrus, camellias, ancient cypresses. Open daily March–November, €10.
