Lake Como Hiking Guide

Easy lake walks and serious alpine traverses.

Lake Como sits between two mountain ranges and offers some of the best lake-shore and ridge hiking in Italy — from leisurely 10km lakeside paths to multi-day refuge-to-refuge traverses.

The Greenway (Colonno → Cadenabbia)

The classic introductory hike: 10km along the western shore, mostly flat, well-marked, passing through historic villages and Villa del Balbianello. 3–4 hours, suitable for older children.

Sentiero del Viandante (Eastern shore)

The historic mule path from Lecco to Colico — 45km in total, but easily split into single-day sections from Varenna to Bellano (the most scenic stretch). High enough above the lake for sweeping views; not too steep.

Monte San Primo + alpine refuges

For serious walkers: the ridge above Bellagio (Monte San Primo, 1,682m) offers a 360° lake panorama. From Menaggio: Rifugio Menaggio at 1,400m is an easy 3-hour ascent with a hut lunch as reward.

Lake Como Greenway vs. Tre Pievi

The lesser-known Sentiero delle Tre Pievi (Menaggio → Croce → Bordeaux) climbs gently through olive groves with continuous lake views — emptier than the official Greenway. 8km, half a day.
