Best Photography Locations in Tuscany

Iconic frames and quiet alternatives.

The Tuscan landscape is one of the most photographed in the world, but the iconic frames have very specific coordinates — and the best ones are 10 minutes apart in Val d'Orcia.

Val d'Orcia: the postcard quartet

Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta (cypress-framed chapel near San Quirico), the Cipressi di San Quirico (the linear cypress avenue on the SR2), the Belvedere podere near Pienza, and Agriturismo Baccoleno's spiral road. All within a 20-minute drive of each other. Best at sunrise.

Florence

Piazzale Michelangelo for the classic skyline, but San Miniato al Monte just above it has better composition and far fewer tourists. The Bardini Garden offers an elevated city view through wisteria in April–May.

Hidden viewpoints

The road from Pienza to Monticchiello at dusk (foreground cypresses, distant hills). The hilltop of San Quirico looking south. The path between Castelnuovo dell'Abate and Sant'Antimo Abbey at sunrise. The garden of Villa La Foce, designed by Cecil Pinsent — the iconic 'zig-zag' cypress road.

At a glance

  • Vitaleta chapel: sunrise, telephoto from the road
  • Cipressi di San Quirico: golden hour, both directions
  • Belvedere Podere, Pienza: sunset
  • San Miniato al Monte, Florence: better than Piazzale
  • Villa La Foce zig-zag road: book a garden visit
