Best Tuscan Hilltop Towns
Ten medieval villages worth the drive.
Tuscany's hilltop towns are not interchangeable. Pienza is Renaissance pageantry; Volterra is Etruscan; San Gimignano is medieval skyline; Cortona is hillside Roman. Picking the right two or three for your week matters.
South: Val d'Orcia and Brunello country
Pienza (Renaissance, pecorino), Montepulciano (Vino Nobile, Sangallo architecture), Montalcino (Brunello, fortress views), San Quirico d'Orcia (smallest, prettiest). All within 30 minutes of each other — a perfect two-day loop.
West: between San Gimignano and Volterra
San Gimignano (14 medieval towers, Vernaccia white wine), Volterra (Etruscan museum, alabaster workshops, the original Mercury statue). Combine in a single full day from a Chianti base.
East: Cortona, Arezzo and the Casentino
Cortona (Etruscan/Roman, the setting of Under the Tuscan Sun), Arezzo (Piero della Francesca, antiques market first Sunday), Sansepolcro (Piero's birthplace, the Resurrection fresco). One long day east.
