Lake Como Day Trips to Switzerland: Lugano, St. Moritz & the Bernina Express

12 min read

One of Lake Como's most compelling advantages over other Italian destinations is its proximity to Switzerland. The border is just 30 minutes from the northern lake towns, putting a completely different country, culture, and landscape within easy day-trip reach. For American visitors especially, the idea of "two countries in one vacation" has enormous appeal.

Lugano — The Swiss-Italian Jewel (30–45 min from Como)

Lugano sits on the shores of its own lake in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. It feels like a blend of Swiss precision and Italian charm — clean, efficient, and beautiful, with palm-lined promenades, excellent shopping, and Mediterranean-influenced architecture.

What to Do

  • Take the funicular to Monte San Salvatore for panoramic views over Lugano, Lake Lugano, and the surrounding Alps.
  • Stroll the Lungolago (lakefront promenade) and visit the Parco Ciani gardens.
  • Shop: Lugano's Via Nassa is a covered shopping street with luxury brands and Swiss watches.
  • Eat: Try a mix of Swiss-Italian cuisine — expect perfect risotto alongside fondue.

Getting there: Drive from Menaggio (30 min) or take the bus from Como. Bring your passport and note that Switzerland uses Swiss Francs, though many places accept Euros.

The Bernina Express — UNESCO World Heritage Railway

The Bernina Express is one of the world's most spectacular train journeys — a UNESCO World Heritage route that climbs from Tirano (Italy) to St. Moritz (Switzerland), crossing 196 bridges and passing through 55 tunnels over 2.5 hours.

The Route

The train departs from Tirano, which is accessible by car from the eastern shore of Lake Como (about 2 hours via the scenic Valtellina valley, or 1.5 hours via highway). Along the way, you'll cross the famous Landwasser Viaduct, pass through the Morteratsch glacier valley, and ascend to 2,253 meters — the highest railway crossing in the Alps without a cogwheel.

Practical Tips

  • Book panoramic car seats well in advance (up to 90 days ahead in summer).
  • Sit on the left side for the best views (heading toward St. Moritz).
  • The regular Bernina train (not Express) runs more frequently and is cheaper — same route, same views, less fanfare.
  • Consider a one-way journey to St. Moritz and return by bus through the Engadin valley for variety.

St. Moritz — Alpine Glamour

The terminus of the Bernina Express, St. Moritz is the birthplace of winter tourism and a playground of the global elite. Even in summer, the town sparkles with luxury boutiques, world-class restaurants, and the stunning Engadin valley landscape.

Summer activities: Hiking the Engadin valley trails, sailing on Lake St. Moritz, visiting the Segantini Museum.

Winter: World-class skiing, the famous Cresta Run toboggan course, frozen lake polo.
