Lake Como's steep terrain and Y-shaped geography make transportation a key planning consideration. The good news: getting around is part of the experience. A slow ferry crossing with mountains reflecting in the water is not just transport — it's one of the highlights of your trip.
Ferries (Navigazione Lago di Como)
The ferry system is Lake Como's lifeline and your primary mode of transport. Three types of service operate:
- Battello (regular ferry): Slow but scenic, stopping at multiple towns along the route. A Bellagio–Varenna crossing takes about 15 minutes. A full north-south traverse takes 2–3 hours.
- Traghetto (car ferry): Connects Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, and Cadenabbia in a continuous triangle. Runs every 15–30 minutes in summer. This is the most practical service for the central lake.
- Aliscafo (hydrofoil): Fast service connecting Como, Bellagio, and the northern towns. More expensive but significantly faster — Como to Bellagio in 45 minutes vs. 2+ hours by regular ferry.
Tickets: Buy at ferry docks or on board. A day pass (biglietto giornaliero) offers unlimited travel and is usually the best value if you plan 3+ crossings.
Schedule tip: Download the official Navigazione Laghi app for real-time schedules. Services run roughly 7 AM to 8 PM in summer, with reduced winter schedules.
Driving
A car is useful for reaching your villa and making day trips, but driving around the lake is a different story. The lakeside road (SS340 on the west, SS36 on the east) is narrow, winding, and frequently congested in summer. Parking in the popular towns is extremely limited and expensive.
Our advice: Use your car to reach your accommodation and for day trips to outlying areas (Swiss border, mountain villages). For moving between lakeside towns, take the ferry.
Water Taxis
For ultimate luxury and flexibility, private water taxis are available throughout the lake. A Bellagio-to-Varenna transfer costs approximately €40–60, while a half-day private boat with captain runs €300–500.
Our concierge team can arrange private boat transfers and tours — the best way to see the lake's famous villas from the water, at your own pace.
Buses
ASF buses connect the lakeside towns, particularly useful for reaching areas without ferry service. Line C10 (Como–Colico along the western shore) is the most relevant for visitors. Buses are inexpensive but can be slow due to the winding roads.
Getting to Lake Como
- From Milan Malpensa (MXP): 80 minutes by car to the southern lake.
- From Milan Centrale: Direct trains to Como (40 min) or Varenna (1 hour). By far the easiest public transport option.
- From Bergamo (BGY): 90 minutes by car — Ryanair's Milan hub.
Our Top Tip
Rent a car for your arrival, park it at your villa, and use ferries and water taxis for daily exploration. You'll avoid the stress of lakeside driving while maintaining the flexibility to make day trips. Our concierge team can arrange private transfers from any Milan airport directly to your villa.
